Your honeymoon marks the start of married life, and as the old adage states, ‘start as you mean to go on’. Honeymooning gives you the chance to kick back and luxuriate in one another's company and ideally should be a combination of ultimate relaxation and fun. Choosing the right destination is pivotal, as it will define who you are as a couple and reflect your personalities, budget and aspirations for a life lived together. We have broken the process down for you to help make choosing easier…
As planning the wedding will have shown, how you communicate your needs and desires to each other is an important part of any planning process. Sitting down together and deciding what you want out of your honeymoon should be easy. You’re soulmates right? And usually this means having similar interests and hobbies or at least an understanding of each other.
If your husband loves golf (and you hate it) finding somewhere with a golf course where he can tee off a few times during the honeymoon while you go for a hot stone massage or sip expertly shaken cocktails next to the pool is a great compromise!
Or if one of you loves exploring while the other prefers to relax on the beach, you could find a destination that offers both. Communication is the key to happiness and it is important to ensure both of your needs are met for a harmonious honeymoon (and relationship).
A fun and low pressure method of finding out what you both want from the honeymoon is to each write suggestions down on a separate piece of paper.
Choose three dream destinations with reasons why and then do a swap. The fun part is finding out how many similarities there are! Great minds think alike and you have a one-in-three chance of matching.
Some destinations have certain vaccines required before you’re allowed to visit. There can also be certain religious holidays or festivals which make the location overly busy and difficult to navigate due to crowds. Research is key in ensuring you arrive at a time conducive to relaxation.
Assuming you have factored in your honeymoon budget as part of the whole wedding planning process, you should have a rough idea of how much money is available. This will obviously determine your destination.
If you’re on a low budget don’t be deterred. There are many affordable options available, you just need to do some research.
Are you summer lovers? Or, do you prefer a cooler climate and huddling around an open fireplace? Everyone's idea of a romantic break varies but comfort is key.
It is worth doing some research to find out when the rainy seasons are in warmer countries and don’t always expect clear blue skies. For example, the rainy season in Mauritius is from November to April which is a massive chunk of the year. You don’t want to spend a fortune on a dream location only to be rained in!
How adventurous are you as a couple? Do you want to hike or chill out on sunloungers? How about exploring luscious vineyards and sampling the wines? Do you want to try something new like scuba diving? The options are limitless, but our advice is to try and match the activities you would enjoy with the honeymoon destination you choose.
This is also the ideal opportunity to try something you’ve never done and are unlikely to do again to make the trip even more memorable. Bungee jumping anyone?
All inclusive gives you the option of being waited on hand and foot, you can enjoy delicious food from dawn until dusk with all drinks thrown in too!
Some holiday providers will also arrange activities, also paid for as part of the all inclusive package. This means there will be zero hidden costs and can help if you are sticking to a budget. Mai Thai for breakfast? No problem. All inclusive gives you the opportunity of ultimate indulgence.
Self catering on the other hand, allows you to explore other restaurants outside of your hotel, so if you enjoy trying new cuisines then this could be the perfect option for you. The only blot on the horizon is you would have to pay for your drinks, so if you both enjoy alcohol fuelled days and nights, this could potentially add lots more spends onto your honeymoon.
