Getting around

Bournemouth is easy to navigate on foot, everything is compact with all roads leading to the stunning sandy beaches. If you want to save on shoe leather, you can hire bikes and E-scooters making it even easier to zip around from bar to bar (not that we're recommending drink-riding), the cycle path system is amazing, so no worries about knocking over pedestrians!

Just download the Beryl app and it costs approximately £1 to unlock and then just 16p per minute to feel the wind in your hair as you explore the city, and also an excellent way to cool down in the heat. Pedal bikes are slightly cheaper than the e-bikes, while e-scooters are slightly more, so you can go for whatever suits you best based on what is available at that time, how much you want to spend and whether you want to try a new experience.

The bus service is another option for exploring the coastline from Bournemoth and beyond, you can catch a yellow bus or a More bus from various locations across the city. The city also has its own airport, perfect for any long distance hens to join the fun, which is located just 11 minutes away from the city centre by taxi. There’s also a regular rail service if you prefer the train.

Tips and ideas

As with any coastal town, there is plenty of fun to be had both on and off the sandy beaches. Bournemouth is a UNESCO world heritage site and renowned for its Jurassic coastline and endless exploration options. There are tours you can take if you want to fossil hunt and swim in the crystal clear waters which have received blue flag and seaside awards. That's quite the rarity for the South coast of the UK.

The city centre is compact and brimming with high street giants such as Primark, H&M, Zara, and Next interspersed with independent boutiques, bars and restaurants. You are always minutes away from the seafront where you will find plenty of beach clubs, an enormous Harry Ramsdens with outside seating and of course, Bournemouth Pier.

There is a Zip Wire which runs from the pier onto the beach, although the set up is completely safe, it isn’t for the faint of heart as you will be gliding from a great height over the sea! You can also buy a group pass meaning it will cost less.

You can see the sights from the top of the big wheel which stands at 100 feet tall, meaning you will be queens of the castle and enjoy unrivalled views of the gorgeous sandy coastline.

Heights are a theme in Bournemouth and another fun way to scale the cliffs is to take a ride on the West Cliff Lift. This funicular railway will take you from the seaside promenade to the cliff top so once again you can enjoy the spectacular views.

All aboard the Land Train for a city tour with a difference. Sit back and enjoy the seafront scenery from the land train, which is technically not a train as it has wheels, but is shaped like one and certainly draws attention as you glide past.

Aside from the golden sandy beaches there are also lots of green spaces in Bournemouth. Boscombe Chine Gardens are bursting with colourful flower beds, an 18 hole mini golf course and cafe. There’s also Lower Gardens featuring Miami style palm trees and is only a five minute walk away from the main shopping centre, another perfect spot to enjoy a coffee and people watch.

Bournemouth boasts the smallest cinema in the UK, which also has a blues and jazz bar attached to it. The Colosseum Bar and Cinema is a must visit for a quirky night out seeing your favourite films from the comfort of leather sofas.

If it’s laughter and a drag show you prefer then you can’t go wrong at Rubyz Drag and Comedy Club. Hen parties are welcomed, just make sure you leave your inhibitions at the door! With over 150 different drinks you are sure to find something you love at Be At One, the venue is super stylish and the team offer a guaranteed warm welcome. Sixty Million Postcards is an American style diner that hosts live music, expect a quirky interior for those Instagram moments. Chaplin's & The Cellar Bar is a small bar which hosts plenty of live music, plus the occasional stand-up comedy. Sip cocktails in decadent surroundings and enjoy city views. There’s live music here at the weekend and delicious afternoon tea on offer too!

Popworld promises cheesy retro fun with regular 80s and 90s nights, fancy dress encouraged. The Old Fire Station has a state of the art sound system and different rooms and levels with various music genres played. A firm favourite with students. Don’t forget you can book VIP club packages through us in the activity section!

Is Bournemouth good for a hen party?

This is one of our most popular hen destinations and you and the girls will be made to feel welcome and have the time of your lives here.

What if it rains?

Fear not, there are plenty of indoor activities and shopping opportunities in the city, although Bournemouth is known as the sunshine capital and generally has more days of sunshine than many other places. Last year there were 1999 hours! Our advice is pack the sun hats and sunscreen and prepare to catch a tan and enjoy those 7 miles of sandy beaches.

What is the accommodation like?

Being a tourist town there are many hotels, hen party houses and apartments, so there’s plenty of space for everyone. If you book your accommodation through us, you will save money and hassle of booking elsewhere. All of our beds are centrally located too, so you and the girls will be right in the heart of the action. Before becoming a hotspot for tourists, Bournemouth was a haven for smugglers and fishermen. The city was recognised as a spa town in the 1800s and it was thought the sea air was a tonic for those spending too much time breathing the polluted air of London. Here are a few other interesting facts about the sunshine capital;

  • The Beatles loved Bournemouth - after Liverpool and London, Bournemouth is the town in which the Beatles played the most concerts and the cover for their second album ‘With The Beatles’ was a photograph taken at the Palace Court hotel in 1963.
  • Bournemouth has been home to many iconic writers such as, JRR Tolkein (Lord of the Rings) and Enid Blyton lived here and Robert Louis Stevenson wrote 'The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde'
  • The city is the birthplace of the Portable Radio, Guglielmo Marconi conducted the experiments leading to its invention.
  • The colourful beach huts are highly sought after here and can range in price from £5000 to £500,000 to buy!
  • Bournemouth Pier is 150 years old, offering traditional seaside arcades, ice cream and the death defying zip wire!
