Tips and ideas

There are many different areas to explore in Newcastle, and you will soon realise why the city is dubbed the party capital of the North East! The locals are all really friendly so expect to be given recommendations wherever you go, but here are a few to get you started on your hen adventure!

The Diamond Strip - This aptly named area is the go-to place for the city's high rollers. Synonymous with sophistication and known as one of the liveliest places to party, the area boasts a multitude of trendy bars and nightclubs. Be warned, this area is wild after dark and filled with fellow party people!

The Bigg Market - A younger crowd flocks here every weekend and you can expect to find cheap drinks, dancing (on tables) and an extremely lively atmosphere. The area is also home to Newcastle's oldest pub, The Old George which dates back to 1582! Definitely worth a visit to sip a pint and stand on the hallowed ground of many Geordies before you.

The Quayside - The Quayside is an integral part of Newcastle's rich trading history, and now home to a modern cafe and bar culture. There’s also live theatre and a thriving Sunday market to explore as well as picturesque riverside walks.

Grey and Dean Streets - If it's craft beer you crave and high-end dining then this is the place for you. Showcasing a long strip of bars, restaurants and cool shops that run from the monument to the Quayside, this is the ideal place for a bar crawl.

Jesmond/Osborne Road - This student heavy area is filled with upscale bars and happy hour deals galore! Jesmond is one of the more affluent areas of the city.

The Gate - A leisure centre with a difference. Expect to find everything here from axe throwing and bottomless brunch, to live music, food and cinema. This all weather venue is definitely one for your hen hitlist.

The Pink Triangle - Newcastle’s LGBTQ+ scene is thriving and the liveliest bars are located between Central Station and Metro Radio Arena, also known as the Pink Triangle or the gay village. Good times guaranteed. Please ensure you contact the venues directly if you plan on visiting as a large group.

The Geordies love to party, so you and the girls will be in excellent company on your nights out during your hen party weekend. There are bars and clubs of every variety to choose from and deciding where to go can be a minefield to say the least! We have compiled a list for you to provide a party starting point!

Bars

Go to Wonderbar at The Gate, you will find bottomless pizza, karaoke, bingo, high-tech darts and a line-up of events, perfect for any hen party. DJ bar Jalou is the place to go for cocktails with a difference, be sure to try a Bee-yonce or a cookie monster, this glamorous late night bar offers an experimental take on classic cocktails that will delight the senses!  Billy Bootleggers is a speakeasy themed bar full of all American memorabilia, with a special Moonshine on the menu - yeehaw!  Jam Jar in Jesmond provides affordable drinks and bottomless brunches, definitely worth a visit for the milkshakes! Crown Posada is a traditional pub where vinyl is played and the drinks are free flowing, described by visitors as a beautiful step back in time, we highly recommend a visit. Hoochie Coochie is a city centre venue dedicated to soul and funk and regularly features top artists and is ideal for hen groups. Junkyard Golf will blow you away with its take on crazy golf and unreal cocktails, the bar area stays open late so you can continue the party. The Tyne Bar boasts stunning views of the river and is the perfect place to relax on a sunny day.

Nightclubs

As featured on MTVs Geordie Shore, TUP TUP Palace is one of the most popular late night venues in the city. You can hire a booth and shake your proverbial thang until 3am. Digital is a club for electronic music enthusiasts and regularly books big dance acts. The club has been dubbed Fabric of the North and 11th on DJ Mag’s top clubs list. Head to Flares for some 70s bangers and club anthems, perfect for fancy dress and hen shenanigans! Livello is the club to go to for cocktails and neon decor. Expect resident DJs playing all musical genres and live music. Try something a little different and visit Stein Beer Kellar, as the name suggests this venue is modelled on a traditional German bierkeller complete with long wooden benches and the occasional Oompah band, this venue is extremely popular with hen and stag parties alike and stay open late.

FAQs

Is Newcastle good for a hen do?

Is the pope Catholic? Don’t ask such silly questions

Is it cold in Newcastle?

Yes is the short answer. Although the weather is better during the summer months (obvs) it is always advisable to wear layers and keep an eye on your weather app. Real Geordies don’t wear coats on nights out even in the middle of winter, so maybe throw caution to the wind (literally) and go native!

How long should a hen party last?

Usually a couple of days, over the weekend. However, Newcastle is the city that parties all week, you can expect to find stuff to do and events to attend every night, so you don’t need to necessarily confine your hen do to Friday and Saturday.
