Getting around
London is a vast city with many boroughs and districts, generally speaking the central area or West End is fairly easy to navigate and during your stay the Tube will be your best friend. As you would imagine, traffic is crazy and although there are buses, we recommend going underground to access all the main tourist attractions. When taking the train, you can tap in with your contactless bank card or phone (previously you needed an Oyster Card, they still exist but not needed as much nowadays). There are plenty of helpful staff in each main station who are always ready to advise you on which lines to travel on to get to your destination.
Another option is to grab a sightseeing tour bus and we have a few options in our hen activities to choose from, there’s nothing like gliding past the sights of Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, The Houses of Parliament and Tower Bridge on a warm sunny day taking it all in at a slow pace. You can always embark at chosen locations too.
Gatwick airport is approximately 40-minutes away by Gatwick Express train and a bit longer by Thameslink, while it will take you straight to London Bridge Station and from there the world is your oyster (card).
If anyone is flying in to Heathrow from abroad, they'll be delighted with the introduction of the Elizabeth Line, which has completely transformed train times when cutting across London, allowing you to go via Ealing Broadway, Paddington and Farringdon on a very short journey time.
Tips and ideas
London is split into many boroughs and districts, it’s like lots of different villages all joined together, each one bringing their own unique vibe. From the boujee shopping of the West End, to pie and mash in the East End, the city is a melting pot of cultures and styles and exploring each is an exciting adventure.
- The West End is an area encompassing Oxford Street and Marble Arch, Leicester Square and Covent Garden, Mayfair and Piccadilly and Soho. You will find all of the main theatres here and each area has its own charm. There’s shopping galore on Oxford Street, which is high street giant central, although we mourn the former days of Top Shop, there are other big brands such as Zara, H&M and Primark to satisfy those shopping urges. While Oxford Street has the big name, the growing popularity of both Carnaby and Covent Garden for shopping is something you should look into if this is tempting you. Leicester Square is a great place to explore, with loads of eateries, cinemas and of course, the famous M&M's store. Covent Garden is an eternal favourite with Hen Party Deals, ensure you visit the Piazza, a popular area filled with street performers, bars, cafes and boutique shops.
- Soho - Although Soho is technically part of the West End, it deserves its own section on account of how much there is happening here. The area was named after an ancient war cry (So-hoooo) and now enjoys an eclectic art scene and high-end boutiques. The famous Carnaby Street is also located here and Soho is also home to the many LGBTQ+ bars and clubs AND the main area of celebration during London Pride, which happens each year at the end of June.
- Camden is an area long since been associated with the cool kids of London. Kate Moss used to hang out here with the rest of the Primrose Hill set in the 90s and of course Amy Winehouse found her home and became famous while living here. In fact there are many pubs she used to frequent, The Hawley Arms being one, which interestingly is also where the Baby Reindeer barman used to work while being visited by his stalker. It’s a cool place and you can buy a pint of Hula Hoops as well as beer. Camden Market is amazing, there’s loads of indoor stalls selling vintage and boho clothing and then there’s Camden Lock, pretty on a sunny day and littered with bars and restaurants.
- Shoreditch is one of London’s trendiest areas is Shoreditch, home to alternative culture with a dynamic music scene. You will find Boxpark here, a shipping container pop up, containing art, clothing and a plethora of street food vendors. Brick Lane is also located here, an area famous for its many amazing curry houses and also home to the best beigel shop on the planet, the 24-hour Beigel Bake, trust us when we tell you the salt beef beigel is life affirming.
- The South Bank is located on the River Thames and a stone's throw away from London Bridge Station. This is the perfect place to spend an afternoon or evening, with The Tate Modern and many gorgeous riverside bars and restaurants. You will also be able to see some of the iconic landmarks such as St Paul's Cathedral and London Bridge.
- Notting Hill has long been a famous area for locals and tourists, but it certainly stepped up a notch after Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts brought it to the big screen. Notting Hill Carnival is a key weekend in every Londoners calendar (take it from this Londoner writing). You'll see beautifully coloured houses and some Instagram-worth spots for you to all relax in. You also have the famous Portobello Road, which is worth visiting if you have time.
Nightlife
As you can imagine, there’s everything here under the sun in terms of theatre, bars and clubs. The scene is also ever-changing with new venues cropping up like mushrooms every few months. Our advice is head to your favourite areas such as The West End or Camden and you are never far away from a vibrant boozer!
Revolution are bars who always deliver on a good time for large groups, you can book your own booth and alcohol package and dance the night away with fellow party people. Be At One reminds us of the film classic Coyote Ugly, except it’s not just women on the bar, all the team have a go! They also serve some of the best blended cocktails and banging tunes are obligatory. Sway is a vibrant bar located in Holborn, with a late licence and great cocktails! If it’s 80s and 90s music you require then head to Car Wash, there's bottomless brunch and the chance to dance the night away to all the classics from both of these eras.
Forge offers 50% off drinks until 9 pm on a Friday, making it the perfect venue to start your hen celebrations! There’s also food and later in the evening quality DJs playing the latest tunes to keep you dancing until 3am. The Loop Bar is a multifaceted party playground that hosts drag brunches. Amazing happy hours with RnB Fridays and Saturday night discos. You will love the retro light up dancefloor, handbags at the ready ladies.
The Sky Garden in the 'Walkie Talkie' building is a hugely popular spot both for tourists, locals and hen groups looking for a nice daytime attraction, with fine dining and a view to match the food, looking out over London from above.
Soho
Soho is known the world over and is one of the busiest areas for nightlife in Europe. Perhaps what is so great about this area is the contrast and diversity, meaning there is something for everyone. You have LGBTQ+ friendly bars, traditional pubs, cocktail bars and wild nightclubs. The queues for the nightclubs are pretty long, so double check with our team whether we can arrange a queue jump and pre-paid entry. You will also find a number of venues playing live music. Plus you will be spoilt for choice for restaurants if you want to head for dinner here before the drinks.
Covent Garden
The prices on drinks are high, let's get that stated straight away, but this is a beautiful area and hugely popular with hen groups wanting something a bit more classy. You'll find a number of stunning cocktail bars and some will offer BOGOF deals if you arrive early enough. The Piazza also offers some great outdoor seating, which works well if the sun is out. The street performers also offer something a bit different to enjoy while on your way to the various bars. If you plan on booking a musical or the theatre, then this is a great place to start drinks off.
Shoreditch
Long looked at as the Hipster capital of London (albeit that label is a bit outdated now), Shoreditch contrasts with much of the other areas of Hackney, a very modern and lavish area with independent bars and venues. You can also find some rooftop bars, which offer something a little bit special for your London hen do. Boxpark has to be highlighted, a hugely popular venue and a chance for everyone to order different food and drinks from the stand of their choice.
Clapham
This Southern stop is a bit further out of town, but with the amazing train connection into Clapham Junction, it has quickly become one of the most popular nightlife areas of London for people in their 20's and 30's. You can expect to find dozens of venues offering bottomless brunch, something we can help with arranging for your group. There are also plenty of pubs with nice big beer gardens where you can enjoy a drink outside in the sun. While you can expect some crowds, it will be much calmer than the central locations on this list.
Camden
Is the bride-to-be a rocker? Well this area has a strong musical history, as previously mentioned, so if you're looking for live music and to embrace the history of the area then this is a great spot to consider. There are canal-side bars which provide a really nice view with your G&T. Camden Market is also nice to explore during the day before the drinks start flowing. There are quite a few pickpockets about, so do keep an eye on your bags.
