Nottingham hen do guide

Nottingham is great if you are looking for

  • Every bar & activity is walkable

  • Over 200 pubs, bars and nightclubs

  • Big student scene meaning drink deals and lively clubs

If you’re heading to Nottingham and you’re short on something or need to pick up something in town, then Victoria Centre is the place for you, with over 120 different shops. The Hockley and Lace Market area might be popular for bars, but it’s also a great spot to explore charity shops and vintage stores. Bring on the game where you have to pick something for each person to wear that night, this one is surprisingly common in Nottingham! Nottingham has a strong food scene, there are so many nice places to eat, while if the budget stretches then they even have some great Michelin starred restaurants, but we mainly list options that match a much affordable budget where they won’t judge if you drink a few cocktails along the way. Because who wants to be told off for having a few espresso martinis and slipping down the chair.

Getting around

Unlike most other cities in the UK, Nottingham has a very European feel with the tram network. Also, it’s incredibly cheap! Before you visit, you might want to tell everyone in your group to download the Netgo app, as this is where you’ll buy the tram tickets and check on routes, while Google Maps is also amazing for sharing details on routes.

For anyone who doesn’t download the app, they can just buy a ticket at the tram stop machine, but you can’t board the tram without one (or risk facing a fine).

There is also a good bus system by the Nottingham City Transport service, with 52 core routes. On their website, you can use the journey planner to work out your route and the cost, while they do accept contactless on the bus. You can purchase a single or a day ticket, while the day ticket might be recommendable if you plan on visiting a number of venues by bus, but as previously mentioned, Nottingham is very much walkable, so it also depends where your accommodation is. We list a number of hotels in Nottingham which are based in the city centre so you don’t have far to walk.

The Robin Hood Card is like the Nottingham equivalent of the London Oyster card, available to use on buses and trams. Once you have it setup, you can simply tap on and off with it, or you can arrange season cards or flexible day cards, but for most visitors, pay as you go is the most common method.

For most people travelling into Nottingham, you’ll arrive by train to Nottingham station (Midland station), which is a 10 minute walk from the city centre. The Lace Market area is hugely popular for nightclubs and bars, so if people are arriving late on a Friday, it’s only a 5 minute walk from the station. Also, in case your accommodation is a bit further away, the tram does stop right outside the train station.

Tips and ideas

Not sure what to do with your hen do in Nottingham? Well the most commonly booked activity is cocktail making. In fact, this has been the most commonly booked hen activity across 20 years. It’s a staple and for good reason. You get the group together, having fun, in a private function room, taking on a workshop while enjoying some drinks. Plus, the cocktail masterclasses often include some food so you don’t get too tipsy.

Escape rooms have popped up all over the country and they are a great daytime activity, often limited to a maximum of 6 people per room, but most venues will have more than one room, so you can split up your group and take on multiple rooms.

Life drawing classes are also a popular activity, allowing everyone to express their artistic talent while admiring a male model. Of course, even if you’re not talented in the art department, you can simply scribble a stick man. There will be prosecco provided, to make sure everyone is relaxed and laughing. This also means you have something to take home at the end as a souvenir, if you want to keep it that is (the drawing, not the man).

Craft workshops has really grown exponentially over the past few years, with the launch of dickorate, where you decorate a ceramic…Well, you get it. Plus there is the chocolate making workshop, which is certainly a lot more innocent and you get something tasty to eat at the end.

Bars are no longer what they once were, while you used to find pubs or cocktail bars, we now have a huge number of activity bars, whether that’s bowling, gaming or themed bars. These are popping up all over the country and Nottingham is no different, with some brilliant activity bars where you can drink and play games to help break the ice for everyone.

Nightlife

Be At One is a great place to start your drinks off, while they also run a cocktail making class, where you’ll get a separate room for your group and a mixologist to guide you through some of the best cocktails to make.

Slug & Lettuce is also great for having large table spaces to fit big groups, as well as getting some lunch or dinner in along with your drinks. They have numerous drink deals available, plus they also run a cocktail making masterclass which we can sort out.

As a combo between a bar and a nightclub, Revolution is a great venue, staying open until midnight on Fridays and 3am on Saturdays, with cocktail making available, plus a dance floor opens up as the night progresses. This is another option if you fancy some food before getting too tipsy.

If you love a bit of cheesy music, then Popworld is the ideal spot for you, often playing 80’s and 90’s music on a disco-style light-up floor and bright colours all around. They also have plenty of cocktails, shots and bombs on their drinks menu, which can make the night really fun.

Another nightclub that is popular with hen parties in Nottingham is Ocean, found at Greyfriar Gate, while this is the student spot, meaning every Wednesday there are excessively cheap drinks and people ready to party the night away, while it’s just as lively on the weekends.

In general, the nightclubs tend to stay open until 3am, a few of the smaller venues staying open until 2am.

If you fancy a bit of a bar crawl through town, there are some nice cocktail bars and pretty venues, such as the Alchemist and Pitcher & Piano. If you start at Be At One on Victoria Street, there are a huge number of bars nearby so you can just pick your direction based on the bars that tempt you the most.

FAQs

Is Nottingham Good For A Hen Party?

Yes, absolutely, Nottingham is a hugely popular hen do destination, with over 200 pubs, bars and nightclubs dotted around the city, meaning it has one of the best nightlifes in the country. It’s also much more affordable than some of the big cities like London and Manchester.

Nottingham is recognised as a ‘Purple Flag City’, which is awarded when the city is a safe night out, meaning there are less concerns when people have had a few drinks.

There is also a strong student culture here, meaning it’s upbeat, you’ll find some great drink deals, plus the clubs get pretty wild.

You have a huge selection of hen do activities in Nottingham, while they’re also very diverse, so they will match the bride's interests, whether she prefers something classy, something adventurous or something that will help the group bond.

What Are The Most Popular Hen Do Activities In Nottingham

As with the rest of the country, the most popular activity in Nottingham is cocktail making. It’s simply a brilliant group activity, as it allows everyone in the group to have a go so nobody feels left out, you all get some tasty drinks and you learn a new skill. It’s also an activity in a city centre venue, meaning if you want to head on afterwards for food or drinks, you don’t have far to go. In fact, you might just want to eat or drink in the venue where you’re getting the cocktail making class.

Beyond this, one activity which has been hugely popular is the bottomless brunch, another drink focused activity, but this one comes with a full meal for everyone. It’s also great, as the drink costs can add up on a night out, therefore by pre-paying for 1.5-2 hours of drinks, nobody has to worry about the price. There are a number of venues, so whether you want pizza at Bella Italia or South American food at Las Iguanas, we can help book this in for you.
